Timber Wave by AL_A and supported by AHEC and Arup

The V&A will be the London Design Festival hub for the third consecutive year. It will host 12 specially commissioned installations and a number of related events, workshops and talks.

The most conspicuous installation is a project that will transform the rigid classical symmetry of the museum’s grand entrance into an organic three-dimensional latticework spiral that spills out onto the street. Timber Wave is made entirely of American red oak veneers and is the brainchild of Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A). AL_A is the architectural practice that won the V&A’s recent international competition to design its new courtyard.

Inside the V&A, France’s accomplished design duo the Bouroullec Brothers will exhibit their expansive coloured-foam and textile installation called Textile Field. It promises a sensual environment that visitors can explore and immerse themselves in.

From the 6 September the V&A will also be hosting a Crafts Council exhibition called Power of Making. The exhibition will display a range of exquisitely crafted objects, including a ceramic eye patch, a fine metal flute, a life-sized crochet bear, a bamboo car, and an embroidering process used to aid surgical implant techniques.

Another initiative showcasing this year is Bespoke, a project based in Preston and organised by a number of research establishments around the country. It explores how design and digital technologies can be used to give a community a say in its own regeneration. There will be a talk about the project held at the V&A on 20 September at 4pm in the Hochhauser Auditorium.
